My story begins with my upbringing in Ras Tanura Saudi Arabia, an Aramco community located on the shores of the Arabian Gulf. Our walled compound was a unique “ home away from home” for families from all over the world. It was not like the United States, or Europe, or the Middle East – but a blend of many places and cultures and people. It was that early and lasting exposure to diversity that has instilled in me an appreciation and sensitivity for cultural, social, and religious differences.
At the age of 14, I went off to boarding school in Farmington, Connecticut because there were no high schools for Americans in Saudi Arabia. I attended Miss Porter’s School for four years, only returning home twice a year at Christmas and in the summer. After that, I moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California. Soon after graduating in 1988, my husband and I moved to Sugar Land to be near my parents who had retired there. We bought our first house in New Territory (High Meadows) in 1992 and our son went to the newly opened Walker Station Elementary School. Two more houses and two more children later, we are still enjoying New Territory! We love the design and look of the community, as well as its schools and amenities. But it’s the people that we love the most. Professional, educated, involved, and diverse, my Sugar Land neighbors remind me of the ones I knew growing up in Saudi Arabia. They come from all over the world – but they have all chosen Sugar Land as their home. One of the things I enjoy most about being a Realtor in this community (which I became in 2000), is getting to know my clients; hearing their stories, discovering their interests, and learning what is important to them in a new home.
A degree in Psychology, a volunteer stint at Houston’s Crisis Hotline, and a position as Crime Victim’s Assistance Coordinator for a local police department all enabled me to hone my listening and problem-solving skills. I also worked as a reporter for the Fort Bend Star and a news broadcaster for Fort Bend Television during the 1990’s which allowed me to get know the county and its leaders.
My interest in “local, local” news, developments that are considered too specialized or too small even for the county papers, inspired me to start writing my own newsletter for New Territory in 2001. I figured if I wanted to know about such things as the need for a new traffic light at an intersection, other people were probably interested too! My pieces delve into such issues as annexation, FEMA required levee projects, wastewater treatment plant expansions, park developments, homeowner association budgets, and water/sewer rates. The goal of my newsletter, “Kathy Morrow’s Territory News” is to provide residents with important information about developments that could affect one of their most valuable investments, their homes. I am devoted to keeping values in my community as high as possible and believe that residents need to stay informed in order to help guide our leaders to make decisions that are best for all of us.
I encourage you to read my newsletter, which is distributed each month with the New Territory Homeowners Association newsletter, and to read and respond to my blog. Also, go to your monthly homeowner’s association meeting and other local meetings about developments in your community.
If you would like specific or more detailed information about any particular area, please email or call me and I will try to help you find it out. I enjoy helping people, to the extent that I am possible, and try to make myself as accessible as possible to my clients and neighbors!
